A trailer dolly, or a tow dolly, is a device that is connected to a trailer truck with more than two wheels, an axle, and a tow bar where a semi-trailer may be loaded to carry additional cargo. It may also be used to support a car to drive it up on a platform and have it pulled by a trailer truck. This is beneficial for people who will be transferring residences. Usually trailer companies can assist in loading up your vehicle to the dolly and attaching it to the rental truck. When you reach your destination, it’s another story. You might need to unload the vehicle on your own. Car trailer dollies may be complicated to use if you are first-timer. But with some research or suggestions from friends, you may do just fine.

Here are a few tips on how to do it.

  • Have the rental truck and tow dolly parked on a straight and flat ground. Make sure to apply full parking brakes on the tow dolly and the rental truck. For rear-wheel, four-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles make sure to reinstall the drive shaft.
  • Then, take off the tire straps as well as the safety chains from the vehicle being hitched on the tow dolly. Place the ratchet handle in the down position. You can now release the pin that locks the tow dolly platform. You may then release the parking brakes off the towed vehicle. You may slowly move the vehicle backwards off the platform.
  • After having the car removed from the tow dolly, you my now proceed to returning the tow dolly platform to the up position. Then, lock the platform again with its locking pin. Settle some of the slack of the tire straps in tie-down ratchet assembly. Replace safety chains back in the storage position.
